Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most finessed and complicated of all cosmetic surgical procedures. A plastic surgeon typically will evolve and improve their rhinoplasty techniques throughout the course of their career.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedures in the world. In addition to providing cosmetic benefits, rhinoplasty can also improve nasal airway breathing, and in those cases, is viewed as a functional procedure

FAQ

How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

The surgical process varies for each patient, but rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient surgery performed under general anesthesia. The most well-known variations of the procedure are open and closed rhinoplasty, although additional techniques may be performed depending on the nature of the planned corrections and whether the procedure is a patient’s first or secondary nose surgery.

Open rhinoplasty is distinguished by a small, discreet incision made along the natural crease of the columella (the base of the nose’s undersurface). From this incision, Dr. Arakelyan can access the bones, cartilage, and soft tissues of the nasal framework to complete the desired enhancements. In contrast, closed rhinoplasty utilizes internal incisions that should not produce any visible scarring. In both cases, Dr. Arakelyan strives to make incisions as inconspicuous as possible to help ensure a harmonious, natural-looking outcome.

Who is a Candidate for Nose Surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that aims to alter the shape or structure of the nose in order to enhance its aesthetic appearance or improve breathing. You may be a good candidate for a nose job if:

  • You are in good physical and emotional health
  • You wish to address humps and depressions, malpositioned nostrils, or nasal asymmetry
  • You wish to improve the appearance of your nasal tip or improve the proportionality of your nose to your face
  • You have a crooked or misshapen nose due to a previous injury
  • You have breathing difficulties or sinus problems that interfere with your daily life
  • You are aged above 15 years and are unhappy with the appearance of your nose
  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome of this treatment

Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance for the citizens of RA?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures are generally not covered by most insurance plans for the citizens of RA. However, some corrective or reconstructive procedures might be covered by your insurance policy as long as you can prove that you’re doing it to fix a physical nasal defect caused by an illness or injury.

Regardless, you should always check your provincial healthcare plan and speak to your doctor about your coverage options. In certain cases, only specific portions of the procedure may be covered.

Will my breathing be affected by Rhinoplasty surgery?

After surgery for up to one year, there will be swelling that will occur inside the nose. This often results in some minor trouble breathing early on but quickly resolves within 1-4 months. Most swelling usually resolves within 6 weeks after surgery, but can last up to one year. During recovery, you can treat the swelling that may occur with ice or ice packs. This will help relieve inflammation and may help if you are experiencing any problems breathing. As internal swelling resolves the internal space becomes more open and breathing becomes much better.

What are the side effects of Rhinoplasty?

A: Pain - Because Rhinoplasty requires extensive alterations of nasal bone and cartilage, patients may experience pain or discomfort following the procedure. Fortunately, this discomfort is usually minor and most patients find that over-the-counter analgesics are enough to manage this pain. For patients who are particularly sensitive to pain, Dr. Arakelyan  may be able to prescribe stronger pain medication.

Swelling - One of the most common side effects from rhinoplasty is swelling around the eyes and nose. The swelling is most noticeable in the days following surgery, but largely subsides after about two weeks. It is important to note, however, that some minor swelling may be present for up to six months following rhinoplasty surgery.

Bruising - The degree of bruising that follows surgery will vary depending on patient sensitivity and the extent of the surgery itself. This bruising is usually contained to the area around the eyes and can last for up to ten days. While bruising is not a sign of any more serious complications, you should monitor your condition in the days following surgery. If anything seems abnormal, Dr. Arakelyan can advise you as to whether any measures besides rest and time are necessary during your rhinoplasty recovery

What is a Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that’s done to fix a deviated nasal septum. The septum is the wall of bone and cartilage that divides your nose into two separate nostrils. A deviated septum occurs when your septum is moved to one side of your nose. Some people are born with a deviated septum, but it can also be caused by an injury to your nose.

What is a revision of Rhinoplasty ?

The revision Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair both form and function of a nose that has previously been operated on. Many people have difficult breathing from their nose or are dissatisfied with the cosmetic appearance of their nose as a result of prior nasal surgery.

What is Sinus Surgery?

Sinus surgery is an effective way to treat a number of problems with the sinuses. Techniques have improved dramatically in recent years leading to better results and a faster recovery.

Sinuses are cavities inside a person’s skull that are situated around the eyes and nose and within the front of the face.

These cavities help to make the skull lighter. They also produce mucus that adds moisture to the nasal passages. The mucus provides a protective layer to help keep out unwanted particles like pollutants, dirt, and infectious organisms.

Sinuses are lined with cilia, which are very fine hair-like cells. The cilia help to drain mucus through the passages of the sinuses and out into the nose.

The most common reasons for sinus surgery are to treat a sinus infection that will not resolve with medications or to treat patients with recurrent severe sinus infections. Sinus surgery may also be needed in patients with severe pain when flying or diving, to remove polyps or other growths or to provide keyhole access to other parts of the skull. In patients with polyps or severe chronic sinusitis, sinus surgery helps to create a cavity within the nose that is favorable to topical treatments.

Blocked noses are one of the most common conditions that I review. There are many causes and a careful assessment is necessary in order to plan the best treatment in order to create comfortable breathing during the day and night.

Why is my nose blocked?

Noses can be blocked by conditions which cause swelling of the lining of the nose and conditions which cause a mechanical blockage to airflow. Frequently both conditions are present at the same time.

People who have hayfever (allergic rhinitis) tend to have generalised swelling of the nose that is present all year around or seasonally. They also tend to get progressive gradual swelling of their turbinates. These are structures sitting on the sidewall of the nose that normally humidify and filter air. When they filter substances that you are allergic to they tend to swell and thicken, blocking the nose.

Other common causes of a blocked nose are a deviation of the nasal septum or bones of the nose. This can occur following trauma to the nose but may also occur as part of your normal facial growth. In some people the septal cartilage grows too large and has to bend inside the nose.

Some people have nasal polyps and occasionally a more serious cause for their blocked nose that needs more urgent treatment.

It is important to assess both the inside and outside of the nose. One commonly overlooked cause of a blocked nose is “nasal valve collapse”. This is a condition where some of the tissues that support the nose on the outside collapse inwards when you breathe in. Patients find relief by pulling on their cheek or wearing “Breathe-right” strips at night.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FACELIFT?

Ensuring a smooth preparation for your Surgery Is crucial to enhance safety and expedite the recovery process, bringing you closer to appreciating your results. Dr.Arakeyan will provide you with comprehensive guidelines, including: Refrain from consuming alcohol and abstain from smoking for several weeks leading up to your surgery, as these habits can heighten the risk of swelling, bruising, and bleeding.

Steer clear of medications that may contribute to bruising and bleeding, especially those containing Aspirin and Ibuprofen. If you require a pain reliever, opt for Tylenol instead.

Avoid tanning before the surgery, as exposure to UV rays weakens the skin and may accentuate scarring.

Consult with Dr. Arakelyan about the advisability of taking multivitamins, vitamin C, or arnica supplements, as they may contribute to a smoother recovery process.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

The duration of the results obtained from a facelift is individualized, influenced by factors like age, genetics, and lifestyle. Typically, the effects of a facelift can endure for 7 to 10 years. Variations exist, with certain individuals experiencing prolonged results, while others may witness a gradual regression. Sustaining a healthy lifestyle and safeguarding your skin from sun damage are crucial practices to extend the longevity of the facelift outcomes.
